Information about Goods and Services Tax in New Zealand

As of 1 July 2018, New Zealand has a new Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15%. This means that you will now pay an extra 15% in  GST. However, some items are exempt from GST, such as fresh food, prescription medicines and some medical services. The new GST rate will apply to most goods and services in New Zealand, including:

  • -Accommodation
  • -Food and beverage
  •  -Entertainment
  • -Telecommunications
  • -Retail goods.

If you are a business that sells goods or services that are subject to GST, you will need to register for GST with the Inland Revenue  Department. You will then need to charge GST on the goods and services you sell and file regular GST returns.
